The Ministry of Word & Sacrament

Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus didn’t give his followers any instructions for creating amazing worship experiences. He also didn’t inform them as to how they could go about transforming culture, or the various steps they could take to have their best life or best world now. Rather, Jesus instructed his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations by teaching and baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Mt 28:18-20). On this program, the hosts are beginning a new series on the importance of recovering the Ministry of Word & Sacrament.

SHOW QUOTE

“The flaw in current Evangelicalism lies in its humanistic approach. It struggles to be supernaturalistic but never quite makes it. It is frankly fascinated by the great, noisy, aggressive world with its big name, its hero worship, its wealth and its garish pageantry—peace of mind, happiness, prosperity, social acceptance, publicity, success in sports, business, the entertainment field and perchance to sit occasionally at the same banquet table with a celebrity.”

“Why We Gather For Worship”

Whenever we gather for public worship, it is because we have been summoned. That is what “church” means: ekklesia, “called out”.

[Public worship] is a society of those who have been chosen, redeemed, called, justified, and are being sanctified until one day they will finally be glorified in heaven. We gather each Lord’s Day not merely out of habit, social custom, or felt needs but because God has chosen this weekly festival as a foretaste of the everlasting Sabbath day that will be enjoyed fully at the marriage supper of the Lamb. God has called us out of the world and into his marvelous light: That is why we gather.
