On this edition of White Horse Inn, I'll talk with Greg Koukl and Brett Kunkle from Stand to Reason about various strategies of passing the faith on to the next generation. In particular, Brett discusses his own crisis of faith during his first semester of college and how that crisis affects his unique approach toward youth ministry. On this edition of White Horse Inn, I'll talk with Greg Koukl and Brett Kunkle from Stand to Reason about various strategies of passing the faith on to the next generation. Beautiful! My husband and I began homeschooling our oldest daughters in 1994 using the Trivium and Great Books of Western Civilization.( mostly online through Escondido Tutorial Services), and catechizing them in the WSC and Three Forms of Unity, once we became Reformed.
I had heard so many sad stories of kids losing their faith when they go to college( especially if they studied phil.). I thought to myself, "What the heck, how does a person lose faith when it is given by God through His grace?!" But to be on the safe side, I was diligent to give them, in high school, the ideas that they'd confront---every high thing that exalts itself.. 2Cor. 10:5) in college and in the world, that could lead them astray. Even so, secular college was a challenge.
My rational for not sending them to a Christian university was that if I kept them further insulated from secularism and Christian antagonists ( I don't mean challenges to morality),during their undergraduate years, they still might go on to grad school and have to deal with them there. But the truth is that they are also more impressionable right after high school, so I'd advise a Christian college if one can afford the tuition.

One thing I'd like to impress on all Christian parents though is to never accept that your child might be reprobate, even if they themselves right out deny belief. That is to give up hope and Christians must abide in hope. We have to become like Monica when are kids are babies, praying our kids into the Kingdom. Yes, tragically, there must be children of faithful parents who end up rejecting their Creator in the end, but no one knows the end but God alone. In fact, Christians ought to drop that language entirely, AND we should stop calling them covenantal kids as if being in the Reformed community or Catholic community guarantees their final perseverance( Romans 9:8). They should know that they have received initial sanctification (justification by their Catholic baptism), but we and they should also plead the mercy of Christ- Kyrie eleison!
Our children face really hard obstacles to faith and Christianity is the only faith that the intelligencia, permissibly, scoffs. We must reflect the love of Christ and give them the best Christian thinkers out there…… including Thomism.
