How does science account for the origin of life with all of its amazing complexity and wonder? Since life cannot be created in a laboratory, how do scientists attempt to explain that it came about by accident or chance? Joining the program to discuss this topic is Dean Overman, author of The Case Against Accident & Self-Organization, and Gerald Schroeder, author of The Hidden Face of God (originally aired April 10 & 17, 2005).

  • Heaven to the Great Designer, is the White Horse Inn in the process of becoming a model for Biblical Creation? I was taught in my pre-ELCA church catechism that God used evolution to create the world. I didn't believe it then and never have. To the best of my knowledge only Dad Rods LCMS, of historic Reformation denominations, openly expresses Biblical Creation as the basic understanding of the Scriptures. Could it be when Christianity realizes that the Creator God gave those created in his image, a multipurpose spine/backbone for something other than walking like an erect ape. Perhaps then, the Gospel of the life, death and resurrection for the redemption of individuals from the bondage of Total Depravity, will again be preached with power to a rapidly decaying world bound in worldview of what Francis Schaeffer called "atheistic humanism."

I can't believe you put someone on the radio that spoke about man created from start dust or light beams. Did know one read his book first to vet him. It throws the rest of what he said about anything scientific out the window.

Brian, I don't think he was expositing Genesis 1, but rather expressing wonder at the concept of matter being 'condensed energy'. God spoke and there was light! We do not give service to the Lord by saying ahead of time how He had to create the universe.

  • While I agree with Brian that Gerald Schroeder must be handled carefully given he seems to come to deistic conclusions, we should not throw out the baby with the bathwater. Ultimately, we must do more than simply deny scientific observations and Schroeder provides some important insights.

Just as in the overblown case of Galileo, there are times when observation will point out flaws in some interpretations of scripture. Finding that a hyper-literal interpretation of Genesis 1 differs from observation simply means that its purpose was not to teach us when and how Creation took place. What was its purpose? To present the pattern of the Sabbath rest, a pattern that plays a central role throughout all of scripture and which is far more important than the date and timing of Creation. Recognizing this and recognizing the poetic structure of the six-day narrative, we can then see that what is written no longer conflicts with properly interpreted observation. There can be only one truth and ultimately both scripture and science must agree.
