Martin Luther once observed that the "difference between Law and Gospel is the height of knowledge." If this ability is lacking, he argued, "one cannot tell a Christian from a Turk or a Jew." So what is this distinction, and why are so many Christians in our day ignorant of these crucial categories? On this program, Mike takes us through a number of important passages that contrast God's command and promise, and explain why this distinction is so important to recover in the church.

    Raine and Bill -

Everything you guys are looking into is great, but the Mosaic Covenant was part of the Covenant of Grace. God saved them unconditionally and gave them the Law (ceremonial, judicial, and moral) knowing full well they did not have the ability to keep it. He made provisions for their lack of keeping it (the ceremonial system). When you read the Psalms this is made very clear. He saved the Israelites, not because of what they did, but because He chose to. He gave them the law AFTER He saved them. He saves us today and shows us His commands - He also gives us the ability to keep them. The Holy Spirit is subduing the sin in the life of the believer. What Dr. Horton states so wonderfully in this message is that when we look at our obeying/not obeying His commands as our JUSTIFICATION before we have everything backwards. We must always LOOK to Christs work our justification. Only then can we properly view our SANCTIFICATION with the understanding that the Holy Spirit is subduing our sin and conforming us to the image of the one we are united with - Christ. "...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." Phil. 2 12-13

    Good Evening Dr. H!
Putting things in my simple perspective (being an old baseball fan), if your sermon was a well hit fly ball to deep centerfield, they'd be pulling out the measuring tape for weeks ..."Out of the Park" Awesome, sir. Thanks and God Bless

  • Dear Michael Horton,

I can not thank you enough for your ministry. The Lord has used you to teach me so much. I was raised on a daily diet of moralism in church, Christian schools and at home. I was the person that you talked about towards the end of your message. When Jesus saved me it was the most wonderful thing in the world. But then I spent years vacillating between self-righteousness and despair. The Lord used two very hard instances in my life to teach me about Him and I'm so thankful! It's all about Jesus Christ! Thank you for your ministry!! I have almost all of your books. I love looking up the Scriptures that you have referenced. The Lord has opened my eyes to His Grace! It is so freeing to know that it's not about me, it's all about Christ!

    Hello,

I clicked on your site through "Pursuing the Old Paths".
After reading many of the comments, I feel led to share some thoughts....because there seems to be confusion about what is the Law & what laws are we to continue to follow ect. The answers given have not truly answered the heartfelt questions.

First, as believers in Christ we are not to be sin conscious AT ALL.
We are to be GOD conscious.
We are to reckon ourselves DEAD to sin and alive to God.
The law is what makes a person conscious of sin, and this is why it is given to unbelievers.

We are to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified...it is the blood of His cross that has RECONCILED all of humanity and ALL THINGS to the Father! This is what brings transformation in a person's life....saying yes to our cross that He gives to us, embracing it, knowing that He gives the grace to say yes, through our cross (our trials & circumstances) He purges out the old nature, so that more of His NEW creation life is manifested and experienced....taking us from faith to faith, strength to strength and from glory to glory!

To Christ Jesus belongs all the glory!

The gospel Jesus preached was/is THE KINGDOM OF GOD! Gospel=Kingdom of God.
The Kingdom of God is the gospel. His grace is out an outflow of His nature. His nature is love and grace flows forth from love.
What is the Kingdom of God? Where is the Kingdom of Heaven?
The Kingdom of Heaven is not in some far off *age* or
out in some far off *galaxy*....no, the Kingdom of Heaven is WITHIN! The Kingdom OF God represents our lives being RULED completely by our Heavenly Father. Our hearts have now become His throne and He rules and reigns from WITHIN.
There is only ONE LAW that is operative within all those born from above and that is the law of the Spirit of LIFE in Christ Jesus. This law (nature) is the essence, and is what moves and courses through every thought, word, and action of His sons and daughters.
Sadly, this is what so many believers continue to miss.
To those born from above scripture is no longer understood by the LETTER...they now have the mind of Christ and see and perceive everything by the SPIRIT.
The letter kills but the Spirit gives life!
We are to cast away all the shadows & symbols and grow up INTO Him in all things.
One example (there are so many) of shadow & symbol is Sabbath. Those born from above and have ENTERED the Kingdom have been made to understand the REALITY of Sabbath.
Sabbath is a state of BEING...not a *literal* day of the week.
One can quote "Luther, Calvin, ect." all day long and still miss the truth....for the TRUTH is a person, Christ Jesus and we are called to be conformed into His image and we are to be led by His Spirit. He was Sabbath...and we are JOINED to Him and are now ONE IN HIM and we too now become Sabbath in the earth and our lives bring rest to all those He gives to us.
These are those that have entered into TODAY --The Rest of God...being joined with the Lord and resting as He moves, lives, has His being IN AND THROUGH them, and in so doing He now ministers His *rest* (His salvation, goodness, ease, blessing, healing, deliverance, provision ect.,) to others.
My heartcry is for all of my Father's son's and daughters to go onward into perfection, into REALITY.
To seek Him...not man, not the letter, ...to seek Him and be led by His Spirit in all things.

His peace, grace, and mercy to you.

I will listen to this message over and over again. The quote by Joice Myers summarized what passes for the Gospel these days, sadly. What Dr Horton shared was so thirst quenching, thankfully.
