The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most beloved and yet often misunderstood passages of the entire Bible. Many think of it as a blueprint for the gradual improvement of the human race through pacifism, love and generosity. But is Jesus talking to the world in general, or to his disciples in particular? Is this sermon exclusively about ethics, or does it also include the gospel? How should we interpret the Sermon on the Mount? That's what's on tap for this edition of the White Horse Inn.

Really glad you're doing a series on this!

Where's the Ridderbos quotation from? (Coming of the Kingdom?)

A picture of the only truly authentic human...Jesus.

And that Word, of what is demanded of us, "be perfect...", condemns us.

Blessed are the pure, meek, etc. First, this means there must be some--pure, and meek. Second, it means that not all are so, just the blessed. And as you have illustrated, these qualities do not come by man's efforts, but by His blessing. He does not bless all men with these, just the blessed. Just those who know they do not qualify for them. Those who imagine they have these blessings (by some other means, efforts etc), they are among those not blessed. Most typically, these are churchmen. As such, I learned that the blessing would only come as a result,of my diligence toward purity and meekness.

"How should we interpret the Sermon on the Mount?"

One could see it by His grace and by His help, the cause or the necessity for the gospel of grace. What man cannot do, now it is God's turn.

John 6:28Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Example: how can one make himself pure in heart to see God?

1 John 3:3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

    How does one overcome?

1 John 5: 1Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. ...4For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Only the Lord can enable believers to understand how little children are free to come to Him, and that is because all they can do is put their trust in the Lord in taking Him at His Word.

We are using the Sermon on the Mount series for our WHI Discussion Group in Bellevue Wa. It was stunning to consider Christ is announcing that HIS Kingdom is at hand and those who are poor in spirit and know it are blessed, because they will be in his Kingdom because HE is making it so. This episode made us confront our lousy self interpretation of the Beatitudes by how we turn it into something we do. The blessings come first in the Abrahamic Covenant. There are things to do, but those are consequences of being in his Kingdom, not a pre-requisite. Our little discussion group on the evening of July 10th 2014 turned into a joyous occasion. This really is good news; it is the best of news. Thank you WHI.
