Is sound theology only for people who have their act together? How is the gospel of free justification relevant to people who struggle with utterly broken lives? Michael Horton discusses this issue with Elyse Fitzpatrick, coauthor of Counsel from the Cross: Connecting Broken People to the Love of Christ. Mike also talks with Elyse about the problem of moralistic parenting as she addresses it in her new book, Give Them Grace: Dazzling Kids with the Love of Jesus.

    Dear Mike:

Your interview with Elyse brought me to tears. I grew up in a Conservative Lutheran Parish, not much different than Rod Rosenbladt's scenario (I'm also LCMS and a retired Pastor). Being also an ACOA, your conversation brought me back to what I've known for years, but not practiced much lately.

Many thanks for this anointed, Christ-centered broadcast and your White Horse Inn Ministry. You make my week every time and I often revisit my podcast archives. God loves you and so do I. We need what you do!

  • Excellent! Like a breath of fresh air. I pray Elyse's approach will catch on in counseling, as the performance based approach seems to be, frankly, stifling and oppressive to me. It may be Biblical 'how to' but it still does nothing to help the burned out or depressed person find the DESIRE to do what they need to do.

I have seen some people recommending Nouthetic counseling as an option for people needing Biblical counsel for very tough family or emotional problems. But in checking it out I was disturbed to see that they tend to take a far more 'performance' oriented approach to sanctification than I thought was Biblical. They don't seem too happy about the latest "gospel sanctification propaganda" (their words on their blog).

Here is their 'gospel sanctification' category of posts:

They even include a post on "preaching the gospel to yourself" about a month before your broadcast by the same name. The attitude about your Biblical approach, to me seems snide.

They do acknowledge that some 'big guns' have fallen for this idea, I would assume that means Modern Reformation and White Horse Inn among others.

    Sigh.

Keep up the good work, thank you again for a wonderful episode. I think I can count on one hand in the last 5 years episodes I didn't exactly enjoy. And that's usually when you had a non-Christian on to talk. :-)

Thanks so much for this broadcast. I heard Elyse and her daughter, Jessica, speak on "Give Them Grace" at the PCA women's conference in Atlanta last weekend. The wisdom and illustrations shared then and on this week's broadcast took my breath away!
