Our friend, Tullian Tchividjian, has a follow-up post to his great article last week, "Why I Hate Accountability Groups." In it he quotes Mike Horton's article, "Does Justification Still Matter?" (Modern Reformation Sep/Oct 2007). As you read both Tullian's post and Mike's article, ask yourself when was the last time that "doctrine" played a significant role in understanding your life in Christ? When was the last time your sanctification was grounded in the work of Christ for you rather than your work for Jesus? People often ask me exactly how Reformational theology is different from what they might hear in a run of the mill evangelical church. The difference is clearly displayed whenever we consider who we are in Christ as the foundation for what we do, how we behave, and how we deal with the sin that still remains within us.

  • today i lost my temper, treated a vendor with disrespect and contempt. tomorrow i apologize. the only reason i can think about apologizing is the fact that Jesus loves me. The atonement provided for me through his sacrifice is more powerful at bringing me into the family than my temper and my idolatry are capable of keeping me out.

Said well. A good reminder. So easy to make even our faith about us. ( Especially in a culture where everything else is just that) And yet on a daily basis I am knocked down on my face back to the foot of the cross.

Doctrine and th pursuit of understanding the Bible in general is THE ONLY WAY we can understand our lives in Christ... I do not understand the premise of your question.

Don't throw all accountability groups out with the bathwater unless you are willing to encourage folks to take the magical mystery tour of heresy. We can all stand a dose of Biblical accountability once in a while.
