Christopher Hitchens: a testimony to the Creator

Our friend and frequent contributor to Modern Reformation magazine has a great reflection on the death of Christopher Hitchens at his Old Life blog today.

From his conclusion:

Whatever these figures might say about God as redeemer, they do testify in important ways about God as creator, making is appropriate for Christians to give thanks for the incomparable product and productivity of these God deniers.

A Special Note from Your Friends at WHI

Every year around this time, nonprofit organizations like White Horse Inn make a special push for tax-deductible donations. Shane Rosenthal, our executive producer, got a little carried away with this ask.

When Supporters Need Support

We rely on the faithful support of our monthly partners who commit to regular giving in support of our mission and work. But, sometimes our most faithful supporters show signs of addiction to the White Horse Inn. Now, there’s a support program for you! Thanks to our own Shane Rosenthal (executive producer of White Horse Inn) who found this great church sign yesterday.

I wonder if their communion is shaken, not stirred?

In keeping with our funny church name theme this week, this picture of St. James-Bond United Church was sent in yesterday. The correspondent says that it was demolished in 2006. Wikipedia says that it was located in Toronto.

Hungry?

Yesterday we pointed out that Lutherans are cool–at least in Cool, California! Today we received evidence from our Orange County correspondent that Presbyterians are hungry–at least in North Carolina.

Cool Church

Lutherans have never laid claim to being a cool church. But now they can! Thanks to our Pasadena correspondent for this picture of “Cool Lutheran Church,” located in Cool, California.

The Bandwagon of My Own Uncertainty

Continuing on with the preaching theme this week, here is a great YouTube clip featuring Taylor Mali from Def Poetry Season 2 on our being “the most aggressively inarticulate generation to come along since, you know, a long time ago!”

Sadly, the “tragically cool and totally hip interogative tone” that he mocks here occupies too many of our pulpits and public speech about God.

Confession App

So, you’ve probably heard by now that the Catholic Church has approved an iPhone app that helps prepare people for making confession. Check out this story from the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia. The very first comment from E-Rock at 1:06 p.m. is priceless!

Dark Days for Scotland

From the Associated Press (November 23, 2010)

A true Scotsman is said to never wear anything under his kilt. But now Scots are being warned that the sartorial tradition could be both indecent and unhygienic. The organization charged with maintaining standards in Highland dress, the Scottish Tartans Authority, is supporting kilt rental firms that want to banish the age-old custom of “going commando.” On Tuesday, Brian Wilton, a spokesman for the group, said: “We are saying, please use common sense and decency, as it can be unhygienic and it can be offensive. If you are out and about in a kilt, then remember to show some decorum. If you are hiring a kilt, then wear underwear because some of them are left in a horrible state.”

This on the heels of word that the Free Church has voted to allow musical instruments and hymns. Scotland may never be the same.
