David Wells “Revolution in Rome” nailed the changes from Vatican II 30 years ago, and is still unsurpassed. Amerio’s “Iota Unum” from the Roman perspective is also unanswerable. I think Godfrey’s comments regarding modern Catholicism are actually understated, and I wonder how much reading he has done here (LOL). The shift in doctrine towards Universalism a la Hans von Balthasar and JPII, and the onset of skeptical modern Scriptural scholarship has produced changes. The change is not just that people don’t always follow the Pope, but that the Popes no longer feel obliged to follow older doctrinal positions. Ratzinger himself had early works put on the suspect list by the Holy Office, and now he is Pope! The astounding thing today is that Ratzinger is able to lobby for tradition in one breath while also pushing the Vatican II reforms. It is producing a cognitive dissonance that can’t go on forever within Catholicism. For every Beckwith that converts there is a David Gibson to frustrate the mix. And voices like Scott Hahn’s that champion Benedict XVIs Biblicism seem to willfully ignore his critical disregard for the historicity of much of the bIblical narrative. Strange times.
