More on Bible Translations to the Muslims

Coming out in 2012 is the documentary Half Devil Half Child which follows missionaries in Bangladesh who are preaching in secret to the Muslim world. They are facing opposition from other Western Missionaries who are allowing Muslim “Christians” to continue to live and act like Muslims. This teaser clip speaks to the issue we brought up last week concerning the removal of offensive words in Bible translations being produced for Muslims.

When the translators weigh in on this matter, people will be reminded of James Dobson and the host of evangelical “leaders” that opposed the TNIV over “brothers and sisters” and third person plural pronouns.
I would love to have a functional equivalent translation of the Bible along with a formal equivalent (NRSV) interlinear on the opposite page. But leave out the Scoffield notes because I might only read those and not the Bible!

“The Challenge of Bible Translation” (Glen G. Scorgie, Mark L. Strauss, Steven M. Voth and Kenneth L. Barker) is an excellent collection of lite readings that demonstrate just how simple and easy Bible translation can be.

Paul: “Simple and easy Bible translation” also tends to mislead and generate theological error that lasts for generations in the churches that read it. In fact, the English translations we have, after a centuries-long tradition of well-educated and faithful workers sweating over them, still contain ambiguities that require study and explanation to avoid confusing God’s people.

The remark was meant to be absurd. A few sentences into the aforementioned book and one realizes that Bible translation is an incredibly complex undertaking. Effectively communicating in a different language to a different culture is little more complex than simply translating "familial terms." And if the translator is really, really passionate, even willing give his life for his translation, that does not make his task of translation any easier.
