Celebrating 20 Years
This year marks the Twentieth Anniversary of the publication of Modern Reformation magazine. In an era of disposable information (and media) this is no small milestone. We’re grateful to you and our many supporters over the last twenty years who have helped make this celebration possible. We want to share our joy by inviting you to participate in a contest to win a free one-year subscription for you and five of your friends plus a Mike Horton “library”: signed copies of The Christian Faith (Christianity Today’s 2012 book of the year in theology/ethics), For Calvinism, the Twentieth Anniversary edition of Putting Amazing Back Into Grace which includes a DVD of Mike teaching on each chapter, the Christless Christianity trilogy (Christless Christianity, The Gospel-Driven Life, and The Gospel Commission), A Place for Weakness, Introducing Covenant Theology, A Better Way, and Where in the World is the Church.
This is probably the easiest contest you’ve ever entered! Just leave a comment below by Thursday at midnight (PST). We’ll randomly choose one comment to win the grand prize. We’ll also choose ten more comments to win one-year subscriptions.

If you don’t win, you can still take advantage of our anniversary special: 20 years for $20. Get a one-year subscription to the magazine, which includes access to 20 years of archived content on our website for the ridiculously low price of $20. At this price you should buy a subscription for everyone you know! (Ok, maybe not everyone, but at least one or two people that you really like.)
Ok, are you ready to play? Just leave a comment below and you will have “entered” the contest. (Make sure you give us a working email address, otherwise we have no way of contacting you!) Not sure what to say? You don’t win based on the quality of your comment, but here are a few suggestions:
- Tell us when you started reading Modern Reformation
- Who introduced you to Modern Reformation?
- Where do you like to read Modern Reformation?
- Any articles/issues that stand out? made you mad? led to an “ah-ha!” moment?
- Or, you can simply wish us happy anniversary
But wait! There’s more. You have TWO chances to win! Our friend, Justin Taylor, is helping us celebrate by running this same contest on his blog. You can leave a comment there and get a second chance to win.

I have been getting MR for most of it’s life. I think my first subscription was around issue #3 or 4. I still have most of the issues on a shelf for ready resource. Love the challenging articles.
Happy Birthday, Modern Reformation . . . my God use you to truly bring a modern reformation!!!
January 24th, 2012 at 7:37 am
Thanks MR! 20 more years!
January 24th, 2012 at 7:37 am
I started reading MR about ten years ago, after listening to WHI several times. I generally read it online. Most of the articles by Michael Horton have led me to have “ah-ha!” moments. I also greatly appreciate the commitment to try to communicate reformed doctrine and Biblical truth to a generation of African-American pastors in training like myself that know the hope that can be kindled and fed thereby. Happy Anniversary.
January 24th, 2012 at 7:38 am
Happy 20th Anniversary! Here’s looking forward to many more!
January 24th, 2012 at 7:39 am

Michael, Kim, Rod, and all the rest of the White Horse Inn Faithful,
Congratulations on 20 years of making the truth of the Reformation known. I was a senior in college at UCLA when y’all got started. My friends and I would anxiously await your Sunday night broadcast on the local Christian station, KKLA I think. We used to get so excited to hear the hoofbeats of the horse and knew we were in for an uplifting, and sometimes hilarious, hour of reformation speak. Your ministry, and Mike’s book Putting Amazing Back Into Grace, convinced me of the truth of the doctrines of grace and gave me the tools to fight dispensationalist theology and rightly divide the Word of Truth. I remember many Friday afternoons rushing from UCLA to Anaheim to beat the evening traffic so I could make it to the Academy. We followed you to Westminster and on to Philadelphia and back, always longing for more of the truth you proclaimed. Those were the days, way back before any of us had heard about the World Wide Web. Now, my iPhone anticipates each new broadcast so I can listen on the go. How the world has changed in 20 years.
So, thank you, all of you, for 20 years of proclaiming biblical truth and bringing a modern reformation to a land and a world so deeply in need of it. May the Lord continue to bless you and keep you.
January 24th, 2012 at 7:41 am

Congratulations to Modern Reformation! The breadth of the articles that has been published has helped me and my ministry for the past 5 years. As a young pastor who is still growing in my theological understanding of Christ, the church and culture I am indebted to this magazine, especially the ones that focus on the doctrine of the church. Thank you for your work!

Congratulations on 20 years Modern Reformation! I am looking forward to seeing the changes in print and paper that will make an already great resource even more valuable.
Also, I loved The Gospel-Driven Life. Both the magazine and the book were sent to me by my wife while I was downrange. They were both helpful and encouraging.
I pray that God continues to bless this wonderul ministry.
January 24th, 2012 at 8:08 am
Wow, I have been enjoying Horton’s articles and blogposts at White Horse Inn. Imagine my delight to learn that he regularly contributes to Modern Reformation. I’ll be sure to read it and find out more about it now! Thank you for your work and gift to the Church!
January 24th, 2012 at 8:12 am
Reading MR with a Guinness is over-realised eschatology.
January 24th, 2012 at 8:15 am
Happy Birthday MR
January 24th, 2012 at 8:18 am
Horton is one of the more thoughtful scholars on the topic of “union with Christ”. Calvin only believed in an union with the humanity of Christ, and did not teach an union with God defined as creatures indwelling the Creator, even though that is left an open possibility in undefined ecumenical discussion.(See the Bruce McCormack and Michael Horton essays in Tributes to Calvin).
January 24th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Happy Anniversary. I first read Michael Horton’s book Putting Amazing Into Grace in 1994 as I was coming into reformed theology and it helped me very much. I had just gone through a church split by teaching on the doctrines of grace. I started listening to the White Horse Inn and several years ago subscribed to Modern Reformation. I have been greatly impacted by Michael’s writings. Thank you and may God contuine to use you.
January 24th, 2012 at 8:23 am

Happy Anniversary, MR! I must admit that I have never had the opportunity to read MR but would love the opportunity now that my interest has been piqued. And as an avid reader of theology, I would welcome adding to my library!
Thank you for your 20 years of ministry–praying for many more to come.
January 24th, 2012 at 8:38 am
The conversations at TWI and through the MR Magazines I have got my hands on my understanding of the distinctions between law/gospel has been the most revolutionary for my walk. I cant say enough as to how you all have helped “Reform” my inherit lawyer within!!! Congrats and Happy Anniversary.
January 24th, 2012 at 8:39 am
Happy Birthday MR!
I enjoy reading you anywhere…..even the bathroom!
January 24th, 2012 at 8:40 am
I am reformed today, in part, because of the ministry of Dr Horton. I read his book “Putting Amazing Back Into Grace” when I was in college. It was the tipping point for me to realize all that God has done for me and mankind in Salvation.
Happy Anniversary MR!!!
January 24th, 2012 at 8:41 am
DCCS subscribes to Modern Reformation and it has been an invaluable resource for both the faculty and students.

I cannot thank you enough for the many years that MR and WHI have benefited me, especially thru seminary. Congrats on the anniversary, and whoever did the re-design deserves a raise (or at least a nice meal)—H&FJ fonts always make reading more pleasurable.

January 24th, 2012 at 8:53 am
I’ve been reading for a few years now. Some of my family had been subscribing me to “Charisma” magazine because they knew I like reading about Christianity. Finally, the stopped
and I began subscribing to MR. It’s the best magazine there is!
January 24th, 2012 at 8:55 am
So grateful for you!
January 24th, 2012 at 8:59 am
The best thing I can say about MR is that it was instrumental in opening my eyes to the glory of the gospel and the richness of the Reformed tradition. So much of who I am (Presbyterian, an elder in my church, a lover of the Reformed confessions) was begun a decade ago when I started reading MR and listening to The White Horse Inn. Thank you guys!
January 24th, 2012 at 9:01 am

Happy anniversary! What an amazing collection.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:09 am
Congratulations on 20 years!
4 years ago I was in the middle of PhD studies when a copy of MR was given to me at ETS. Between MR and WHI, I don’t think I have learned as much or been as excited about the faith I hold so dear. Now a pastor, my wife and I are so grateful for the categories MR has taught us so we can communicate these truths to a congregation who is eating it all up too. You have been a true gift from God in a day that so need it.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:11 am
Congrats on 20 years and all that!!!!! Yes, Happy Anniversary….but frankly I really REALLY REALLY want to win that grand prize! God bless and sincere thanks!

Happy 20! I started reading this past year, my first subscription. And I’m loving the content. I first learned of it through discovering the WHI blog. My favorite place to read it is at home in my second-hand wingback.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:33 am
Happy Anniversary!
January 24th, 2012 at 9:34 am
I read MR late in High School and in College. It was very helpful and encourageing when I was getting my legs under me theologically. Happy Anniversary MR!!

January 24th, 2012 at 9:47 am
congrats on 20 years.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Happy 20th Anniversary.
I don’t remember exactly when I started reading Modern Reformation or who introduced me to the magazine. I wish I could remember.
One article that stands out is “Romans 7 and the Normal Christian Life” by Kim Riddlebarger.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:51 am
Happy Anniversary to Modern Reformation! I was first introduced to MR back in 1992 when I saw and purchased the May/June 1992 issue entitled “Arminianism” at the Riddlebarger’s Christian bookstore that they used to have at Knott’s Berry Farm (thank you Kim!). This was my introduction to the Reformation. Thank you for 20 enlightening years.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:54 am
Happy Anniversary, MR!
January 24th, 2012 at 9:55 am
Congratulations!! Keep doing the good work.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:56 am
Thank you MR! I am also excited by Dr. Horton’s new Systematic Theology book!
January 24th, 2012 at 9:59 am
I was first introduced to Modern Reformation through the White Horse Inn, which a friend at church had introduced to me. I’ve always been impressed by the content and look of the magazine. Sometimes you only get one or the other, but it’s nice to have quality across the board. Of course, the Christ centered content is, in my mind, the great hallmark of both Modern Reformation and the White Horse Inn. Happy Anniversary Modern Reformation!
January 24th, 2012 at 9:59 am
Happy Anniversary! I wonder whether there’s any way to get your first 20 years’ worth of issues into Logos software. I could see this expanding your reach and allowing many new readers, pastors, and scholars to take advantage of your efforts over the years. May each of our hearts be reformed daily by His grace, enamored by His love.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:01 am
Thanks for all the important work you do – such a blessing!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:03 am

January 24th, 2012 at 10:04 am
Particularly grateful for Michael Horton’s work on the lordship controversy, assurance, and the law and the gospel.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:10 am
I Love MR and WHI. I’ve been reading/listening for about 3 years now. The WHI podcast is a frequent listen on my morning runs. Keep up the good work.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:10 am
The first edition of MR that I read was their Calvin 500 anniversary edition, which I still keep referencing from time to time as need arises.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:11 am
Happy Anniversary! I just found out about MR today. Feel like I’ve stumbled onto something here. Super excited to read it and to continue to grow in knowledge and understanding of the word. Thanks for providing biblical scholarship and the opportunity for many to grow in their faith!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:14 am
Praise God for your fruitful ministry, MR!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:18 am
I subscribed a year ago and I can’t wait for the issues to come in! It is rare that I literally devour an entire magazine, but Modern Reformation is the exception. I greatly appreciate MR’s stance and look forward to many more issues.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:19 am
Happy Anniversary Modern Reformation! I’ve been reading your magazine since I was a young believer and it has truly helped shape my views in a Christ centered way on many issues. God Bless all of the MR staff & writers!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:24 am
Congratulations on 20 years. I love listening to the White Horse Inn.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:36 am
MR sounds like a wonderful publication judging by what Dr. Horton was saying.
Happy Anniversary!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:39 am
Congrats! Keep up the good work.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:40 am
I first read Modern Ref on the recommendation of my former professor of Apologetics and Classical Christian Thought, the inimitable Rod Rosenbladt at Concordia University Irvine.
Though I still enjoy reading Modern Reformation for my own edification, I have taken great joy in introducing the great truths of the Reformation expounded in the pages of MR to 700+ impressionable 16 and 17 year old evangelicals over the past several years in my vocation as a Bible teacher at a Christian high school.
Obviously, every student doesn’t “get” the content that they are reading – but a significant number do! And it’s my prayer that the Reformers’ understanding of scripture that is so clearly articulated in the pages of Modern Ref will one day come to mind and cause them to stop and give reformation Christianity a fair look as they are on their way out of the church towards complete contentment with their moralistic therapeutic deism.
Thanks so much for your continuing efforts in ministry.
January 24th, 2012 at 10:45 am
Happy 20th!
January 24th, 2012 at 10:49 am
Happy Birthday MR!

January 24th, 2012 at 11:17 am
Happy Anniversary, MR! I was introduced to MR about 13 years ago and have profited greatly from its content.
January 24th, 2012 at 11:18 am
Happy Anniversary, Modern Reformation!
January 24th, 2012 at 11:18 am
I have never read an issue of MR, but if it engages fuzzy headed evangelical thinking like Mike Horton does in his lectures, sermons, and books then I need to read it. MR I believe carries on the legacy began so many years ago by the late J. Gresham Machen of whom I consider to be a hero of the faith.
January 24th, 2012 at 11:21 am
You guys have lit a reformed flame down here in the Southern Part of Africa. Thank you so much for your work in the advancement of the Gospel. We are praying for your ministry. May God grant us a Modern Reformation in our time!

January 24th, 2012 at 11:39 am
Been listening since 2007. A-Ha moments often. Romans Revolution is the best series you’ve done. Horton is excellent. The old Lutheran guy (ha ha, I mean Rod) is funny. Ken puts up with a lot and I love his pastoral way. Kim is probably my favorite. All four spark a great conversation. Here’s to MORE and MORE Evangelicals discovering this program … and the truth it points to: Christ Saves Sinners. Subscribe to MR now!!! Send it to your seeker-sensitive friends.

Happy 20th Anniversary MR! I sort of heard of you before today b/c of linking to White Horse Inn articles from other sites, but this article is the first time I can say I actually know what MR is…but stillonly factually, I would love to win and thus KNOW by experience, but if I don’t win it won’t happen for a while as we are a one income family with no TV bill, internet bill, or any subsriptions (unless you count the Philippian Fellowship @DG as a subsription). Whether I win or not thanks for this generous contest and for producer such a worthwhile publication!

Just received the new anniversary edition of Modern Reformation and want to order 40 copies for distribution here at Campbell Baptist Church, a grace-alone-loving church in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
This edition ‘alone’ is a great foil against the spurious attacks from Roman Catholic apologists.

January 25th, 2012 at 8:31 am
Congratulations on 20 years of faithfulness and hard work.
January 25th, 2012 at 9:31 am
I started reading MR sometime around the year 2000. I came across MR and the White Horse Inn while I was doing research as a newly Reformed-minded christian. My reading of Dr. Packer and Dr. Sproul led me to Dr. Horton. Dr. Horton’s “Putting Amazing Back into Grace” changed everything for me. It was the first explanation of the Reformed faith for me that warmly tied truth to life, as opposed to most treatments that leave you in the realm of theory or the treadmill of practicality. This led me to MR and it was what I needed to sort through so many nuances and internal debates within the Reformed world. The MR article that really hit home was “Gospel Driven Sanctification” by Jerry Bridges. Congratulations on 20 years and thanks for not just what you teach but also how you teach it.
January 25th, 2012 at 10:43 am
Thank you Dr. Horton for this great magazine which has encouraged my spiritual growth for the past 10 years. I wish I would have known about it much sooner. Congratulations on turning 20 MR!

Happy 20th Anniversary! Have been a subscriber since 2003, originally hearing about MR on the White Horse Inn, which I listened to on the local Christian Radio station. Too many good articles concerning the Reformed faith to single any out, but the magazine simply confirmed that event though I was raised in the Wesleyan Methodist tradition, I had always really been a Calvinist at heart! Thanks and God continued Blessings on your endeavors!
January 25th, 2012 at 2:32 pm
What a great anniversary! Blessings for many more years of faithful and fruitful ministry!

January 25th, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Congratulations on 20 years!
January 25th, 2012 at 8:54 pm
I read MR curled up in a recliner. I’ve been reading it for several years now, and also enjoy digging into previous issues online that were written before I found you. (Note: really enjoyed Dr. Riddlebargar’s article on Using God 2007. Honestly, I enjoy all the articles in each issue).
There are no words to tell you how grateful I am to have this resource available, knowing I can trust the content held so preciously within its pages. I found MR by watching Dr. Horton at a Sproul conference and shhh….I’ve replaced my Sproul time with WHI and MR time.
And look what you guys did…I’m now a Confessional member of the URCNA. Thank you for your faithfulness to scripture, so that those of us who once wandered in the evangelical wasteland now do not wander but are fed…real food.
My only comment on the new design is that the type is very small and cramped for aging eyes. It pushes me to have to go online so I can enlarge the text and it’s hard to do that curled up in my chair. There’s just something about holding that paper in my hand that I still love. The cover this month was beautiful! Thanks again for everyone’s contribution to this worthy endeavor. Please know it is greatly appreciated.
January 25th, 2012 at 9:06 pm
I’ve begun my first Horton book, The Christian Faith, and have thoroughly enjoyed it so far. Looking forward to finishing this one, and reading more in the future!

Happy Anniversary!
January 26th, 2012 at 10:31 am
Happy Anniversary, Mike…and staff. I started reading Modern Reformation because I was intrigued with the neo-reformed movement sweeping through the young adults in my Baptist church. I come from a thoroughly Arminian tradition, and you haven’t swayed me from that yet. But your magazine has helped me understand some viewpoints better. I especially appreciate the emphasis on civil discussion, since a “humility of doctrine” has not been a hallmark of my discussions with newly-minted Calvinists.
I wish you and your staff every blessing as you begin your third decade examining the mysteries of God’s grace.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:35 am

MR has been speaking into our culture from a consistently Reformed perspective for 20 years now…. that gets me pumped! Thanks!

Happy 20th Anniversary! I have kept all of my issues of MR, except for a few given to very close friends. Keep up the good work!

Modern Reformation and The White Horse Inn have been invaluable in the formation of my theology. I am endlessly grateful to ya’ll and others like; that helped prevent me from falling into the dark, giant pit that seems to be popular “christian” thought.

Modern Reformation and the WHI have revolutionized my theology. Thanks for being the calm in the storm, the truth in the chaos, the diamond in the rough, and the rock in the shifting sands. You are a blessing! Press on!

I’ve been listening to WHI for the past 4 or 5 years and have been a Modern Reformation subscriber for almost three years. Every issue has several ‘ah ha!’ moments for me–not road-to-Damascus epiphanies per se, but often just a fresh perspective on a concept or doctrine that I’ve embraced my entire life as a confessional Lutheran. Offering up a prayer of thanks and for God’s continued blessing on Modern Reformation, its staff and contributing authors!

I love ModRef AND WHI for helping me contend for biblical Christianity.

20 years for a magazine was so understated in your post. Really. It’s amazing in this day that that any magazine survives. It is a testament to the magazine and the broadcast.
Congrats!

WHI is awesome, looking forward to those theses for a modern reformation.

Thanks WHI

I owe much of what I know about theology and reformed thought to WHI and MR. These ministries have been a great foundation on which I have build my walk with the Lord the past 20 years. I am now a student at WTS in Philly and am excited to see how God will put all of this great teaching to use in the future. Keep up the good fight Dr. Horton and friends!

Happy Anniversary!! I love how you bring a “modern” spin to what the reformation started so many centuries ago!!
January 27th, 2012 at 3:10 am
Happy Anniversary! I first began reading Modern Reformation about 10-15 years ago. I tend to read the print and online versions. I learned about the magazine from my Mother. The articles about “The Matrix” films and “Augustine and Jerome” stand out among the more memorable articles. Thank you!

So Many Teach. Not Many Correctly! Thanks and Happy Birthday !!!
a horrible sinner turned me onto White Horse Inn back in 2005.
I was born in a Semi P. Church so the first time i heard the White Horse Inn I thought it was Full Blown Liberalism Theology.
Yet by Grace i kept listening and listening and listening with my Bible open.I then subscribed to M.R. in 2006.Running to the Mail Box sometimes, even reading the mag from cover to cover the first day vol.16#5 Sept/Oct 2007 The Art of Self-Justification.
This year am thinking about Up-Grading my sub to get the extended C.D.s with extras from the show.Forever Grateful KMH
