For and Against Calvinism
We’re very excited to announce a unique opportunity to witness and participate in the kinds of conversation that matter. Mike Horton and Roger Olson have recently written two books: For Calvinism and Against Calvinism, respectively. They will be on stage together at Biola University on Saturday, October 15, 2011, to discuss their differences and why the issue matters.
This isn’t a debate; it’s a conversation. It’s based on twenty years of mutual respect. Sadly, these kinds of conversations don’t happen nearly often enough. Most of the time we’re looking for a fight, for a debate, for an opportunity to score points. But for the church to know and experience a modern Reformation, we need to engage those in and outside of our circles with respect and a willingness to listen.
We don’t want you to just listen in; we want you to join the conversation. There will be an opportunity for you to submit questions for both Dr. Olson and Dr. Horton. We’ll have more information about that later, but for now I hope that you’ll make plans to join us on October 15th at Biola University. If you can’t join us at Biola, plan on joining us in Miami, Florida on January 28, 2012, where we’ll host the same conversation for our East Coast friends.
The doors open at 7:00 pm on October 15th at Biola. Visit our bookstore at the event and grab your own copy of For Calvinism and Against Calvinism. There will be an opportunity for the authors to sign books after the conversation concludes.

My respect for Dr.Olson took a nosedive in the manner in which he responded to Dr.James White.Of course I hold if Olson ever debated Dr.White over the doctrines of grace , well I would say from reading some of his arguments , it would be fun to watch. I look forward to hearing Dr. Horton really take him to task over some very weak exegesis .

Roger Olson already has a book published about Arminian theology called ARMINIAN THEOLOGY: MYTHS & REALITIES. Olson’s book was meant to be about why he is not a Calvinist.
As for WHI’s policy of keeping the discussions away from adhominem, it seems this blog is very close to being a place for Calvinists to simply call others’ exegesis weak without any substantiation. In other words, the comments about someone being “taken to task” by someone else have little to do with content and thus the warnings about adhominem arguments on this site feel more like warnings to people against Calvinists not use adhominem but not the other way around.

Dear Lane,
The complaint about ad hominem stems from the comment posted by Reg Schofield above. The comment may not be an explicit “name-calling” character attack, but the attitude of it sounds whiny enough and you can feel the quarrelsome tone in his words like “take him to task” paired with “weak exegesis” and “fun to watch.”
I’m sorry the complaint wasn’t too clear. People sure can sound like a bunch of whiners when they make attacks on others in a blog locale where most others will automatically side with them.
The discussion above is primarily people daydreaming over whether some Joe can out-talk some other Bob. When the discussion paints the picture of a fight with words like “take to task” it sure sounds like an argument against the person, not the subject.
Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
I hope that even if I was wrong in the precision of my complaint, you can benefit from it. However, I don’t think I’m too far off.

I’d like to add I want to apologize for the defensive use of scripture above. You all, I assume, are my brothers in Christ although I also assume we probably disagree on a number of things. Lane, I want you to know that I will be more careful in using the correct words in the future.
I just don’t want the real thrust of the comment to be dismissed because I believe this site can be so much more than another blog for Calvinists to simply bark and beat their fists on the table about people who disagree with them. You should be able to disagree with someone and not be too defensive about it, even have a little fun. I think the problem that I had was mostly with the comment about someone’s respect for Olson taking a nosedive. I highly doubt that person actually had respect for him in the first place, and there is scarcely a place where you can find someone talking about Mike Horton’s character and not find Olson’s rebuttal to that comment about how outstanding Horton’s character is.
If nothing else, I’d just like to see more than basic trash talk happen. I’m pretty sure that’s the intention of this site.
