What about those of us who can’t afford the thousands of dollars a year it takes to send just one child to one of these schools? If we choose to homeschool, are there some programs, such as K-12, that are better than others?

Mr. Cook, there a several really good options for homeschoolers to pursue excellent Classical Christian educations for their children. Veritas Press has a “scholar’s academy” geared toward homeschoolers, and Classical Conversations is also an excellent tool/organization. Before these options were available many homeschoolers chose to just follow the Veritas or Logos academy curriculums and materials, which also worked well.

Mr Cook,
In addition to those mentioned above, Memoria Press (memoriapress.com) also publishes good classical materials for homeschoolers. Between Veritas and Memoria, we have successfully homeschooled 2 kids through high school (and 6 to go!) with a classical focus.

Thanks so much to both of you for the help. We just started the K-12 program for his 2nd grade year, as he has attended public schools up until now. To be honest, if he is anything like his father, he is a slow learner, so delaying the switch to a classical curriculum for a year and getting used to the home school format first may be best for him. Matt, good luck with the other six.

Wasn’t there a big reprinting of Charlotte Mason’s works and other books on the order of a more-or-less classical approach to education, not too many years ago? I know my wife and I plan on using an eclectic curriculum in homeschooling, but one that focuses on the trivium, and on putting great books into the hands and brains of our kids.
