WHI-1065 | Preaching the Gospel to Yourself
Throughout this year on White Horse Inn, the hosts have been making the argument that unlike the law the gospel is not in us by nature but must be preached into us from the outside. This is why the proclamation of “Christ and him crucified” is the primary task of the Great Commission. But if the gospel is really to be understood as a foreign announcement, is it enough to hear about it in sermons once a week? If the law is in us by nature and our consciences regularly accuse us of sin hour by hour, shouldn’t we learn to preach the gospel to ourselves? Michael Horton discusses this issue with Joe Thorn, author of Note To Self: The Discipline of Preaching to Yourself. The second half of the program features a discussion between Michael Horton and White Horse Inn executive director Eric Landry about our upcoming conference cruise, “Conversations for a Modern Reformation.”

Thanks to Joe Thorn..I”ve ordered Note to Self and look forward to reading it. As to the chat about the WHI cruise.. PLEASE PLEASE can you post the feature talks from each of the hosts? The topics were pretty much everything I am struggling with as a newbie to Reformed theology. I would join the cruise in a heartbeat and have been trying to scheme ways of making it there. But as my husband has helpfully pointed out I will be 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time! So hopefully those of us who are unable to be physically present can join in the conversation too.

Here’s a great Joe Thorn blog, “Is the main thing the only thing?”
http://www.joethorn.net/2011/08/15/is-the-main-thing-the-only-thing/
Here’s one tidbit:
Let’s take one example. I need to learn how to pray, but I also need to learn, and be reminded, that I can only pray because Jesus has made peace between God and sinners like me. … I need counsel on how to pray without ceasing, but I need the confidence that Jesus prayed perfectly in my place, prayed on my behalf, and currently intercedes for me. These gospel principles don’t merely complement the command to pray, that satisfy it. They do not remove the need to pray, they give freedom and power to approach God with boldness.

I was very disappointed that the second half of this show was an infomercial for you cruise. Not may of you listeners can afford to go nor think its is a wise use of our money.
A small one minute commercial is fine but using 1/2 of you valuable programing time for an cruise infomercial goes to far and a poor choice in stewardship.
