The Great Commission calls us to preach the gospel to every creature, but just what is this gospel that we are to proclaim? Some say it’s being born again or asking Jesus into your heart, while others say that it’s a call for us to participate in Christ’s ongoing work of reconciliation and redemption through building a more just and loving society. Gospel according to Jesus or Gospel according to Paul, is there a difference is there dissonance between Paul’s take on life and Christ. I think the Apostles affliction has a lot to do with his writing. We all are not afflicted like Paul, but some are, Look at life experience, all in Christ are blessed but there are some difficult painful paths and some that seem blessed and seem free of pestilence.

The Gospel isn’t a set of transformational steps that I must climb to get saved. The Gospel is a story — our story — that we tell the world what Jesus has done, is doing and will do.
Doesn’t the Nicene Creed, the universal Gospel in a nutshell for over 1,600 years, remain the Gospel summary?

How could one be considered a Christian and disagree with it?
Since no Reformation creed has supplanted it, doesn’t the Church who gave us the Nicene Creed, retain the Gospel?
Isn’t the Nicene Creed this Gospel story?

Hey guys – It would be great to hear a little exposition on Revelation 3:20 in the context of future discussions regarding the dominant concept of “inviting Jesus into your heart”. I would bet that a vast majority of non-reformed, evangelical folks in the seeker churches have NEVER heard the alternative interpretation of R3:20: This is *not* a verse to be used as a tool in evangelistic attempts to reach lost people because Christ was addressing THE CHURCH (“Xians”) in Laodicea, not “unbelievers”. This is another popular verse/concept that needs to be gently explained. It might even open the door (pun intended!) to good discussions about election. WHI-1061 would have been a great place to get into that.

I’m curious to hear your take on the description of the Gospel in Colossians 1:7, where the ESV Study Bible states Paul makes it clear that “the gospel involves systematic instruction in the faith and in how to live as a Christian.”

Col. 1:7 You learned it from Epaphras makes it clear that Paul did not plant the church at Colossae. The people heard the gospel from Epaphras (a shortened form of “Epaphroditus”), who is a fellow Colossian (4:12). The term for “learned” (Gk. manthanō) is closely related to the term “disciple” (Gk. mathētēs). More than merely listening to a simple gospel presentation, Paul makes it clear that the gospel involves systematic instruction in the faith and in how to live as a Christian.

Hi, thank you for your show. I’m so grateful and listen regularly.
I’ve listened to this particular episode 2 or 3 times now. Thanks for the enlightening perspective. I’m in school for Bible Translation and trying to apply what you’re discussing to what I’m hearing about how conversion tends to happen on the field among people who have very little of the cultural and Biblical background that we assume when we present the Gospel as you defined it in this episode.
Some friends and I are having a little discussion on Facebook and I quoted you Michael. Maybe you or someone on the show have some thoughts?
